Preparing Students for Careers in Construction
If you get a chance to attend one of the few construction industry summer camps offered throughout the state of Oregon, DO IT!
The NW College of Construction runs one such camp in conjunction with Construction Hope. They give teenagers a chance to learn about carpentry, masonry, welding, sheet metal, waste management, and environmental restoration. In addition to learning how to build in the shop, students visit active job sites in both urban and wildlife settings!
Another program is the Pacific NW Carpentry Union’s Summer Camp. This is a paid, 8-week internship program supported by some of the largest building contractors in the city. Students get to “test drive” a career in construction working side-by-side with experienced carpenters, concrete workers, and other trades 40 hours a week for $12 an hour.
